On 14 October, the European Commission announced a new trade and investment strategy for the European Union: “Trade for All: Towards a more responsible trade and investment policy.”
The strategy consists of a number of initiatives which are grouped under the headings of effectiveness, transparency, values and the EU’s programme of negotiations. As part of a more effective policy, the aim is to update trade policy to reflect certain economic realities, including global value chains, the digital economy and the importance of services.
It also aims to create a more transparent policy by extending the TTIP transparency initiative to other EU trade negotiations.
The new trade and investment policy will aim to mirror EU values by including anti-corruption rules in future trade agreements as well as by enhancing measures to encourage sustainable development, fair and ethical trade, and human rights. Its principles will guide all future trade negotiations that the EU is conducted with third countries.
